Tuesday Menswear Moment: Clive Ownen Now and Then

The October, 2014 issue of GQ hits the stands nationally on Sept 30 , and it’s the venerable Old Boy’s  “Age Issue,” featuring five different covers hunks from Hollywood and Sports.  Soon-to-be 50-year old Clive Owen (his birthday is Oct.3,) a longtime badass fave of mine, is one of the cover guys…..\r\nClive Owen GQ Oct 2014\r\n\r\nYou can read more about Clive’s spiffy look and his thoughts on approaching nifty 50 when a special online-only content feature goes live this Thursday.  HOWEVER, it’s not just that Clive is fabulous in a slim cut modern suit, but if you’ve been paying attention to TV, you’ve also noticed him looking dapper, yet deranged, on Steven Soderberg’s Cinemax series The Knick….\r\n\r\nThe show’s title refers to the Knickerbocker Hospital, a fictional New York hospital during the real year of 1900.  It’s gruesome, gritty and utterly fascinating.  Owen plays Dr. John Thackery, brilliant surgeon with a very, very bad drug addiction.  The series explores race issues, class issues, abortion, the treatment of syphilis, etc.  As with any great historical drama, there’s got to be discussion about the look of a show, its costume and production design.  Will it have a misty, nostalgic look or something closer to reality, with a few modern touches.  Soderberg chose costume designer Ellen Mirojnick and production designer Howard Cummings, who last worked together on Liberache biopic “Behind the Candelabra, to create the gritty visual verisimilitude to accompany the story lines.   Owen, who is one of the Executive Producers, wanted a “natty gentleman look” for Thackery, who while an addict is neither rake nor rogue.  Velvet jackets in dark navy and forest green, white leather boots (the kind wore by doctors during the dawn of the 20th Century,) bowler hats, and stiff collars define Thackery’s look and make him ever more dashing…..Clive Owen as Dr John ThackeryHonestly, it doesn’t matter what Clive is wearing–old school or modern day–the man is absolutely dashingly fabulous!  And if you haven’t already, catch The Knick on Cinemax, Fridays at 10 p.m. (also onDemand and CinemaxOnTheGo)\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n
